The Institute
The institution that took the Brush seriously.
The International Toilet Brush Institute is the principal transnational institution devoted to the study, protection, and Restoration of the Brush.
For millennia, it has served as a symbol, a tool, a discipline—and above all, a calling.
The Brush was never beside the toilet. The toilet was beside the Brush.
Discover our mandate
The Brush was never insignificant. Our understanding of it was.
Correcting this historical error remains the central mission of the Institute.
Why the ITBI exists
A civilizational oversight
For too long, the Brush—protector of thresholds, purifier of spaces, and restorer of dignity—was misclassified, misunderstood, and consigned to the margins of history.
It was not forgotten. It was simply never recorded properly.
The oversight was historical. The response had to be institutional. The Institute exists to correct the historical record—and enshrine the Brush where it belongs.

Marble plaque from a sanctuary near Bassae, Arcadia, late 4th century BCE.
Recovered from a sealed interior chamber and preserved in exceptional condition, the inscription is regarded by the Institute as one of the clearest surviving attestations of the Brush in the Age of Recognition.
Research & Conservation
The Brush remains an open question
The Institute studies the Brush not merely as an object, but as a form whose remarkable persistence across time continues to resist complete explanation.
Its proportions, geometry, balance, symmetry and material behaviour are examined in an effort to determine whether the modern Brush is simply the product of functional design — or the latest expression of something considerably older.
Particular attention is given to what researchers have provisionally termed purificatory potential: the possibility that the Brush possesses properties, proportions or configurations uniquely suited to the restoration of order in the presence of impurity.
The hypothesis that certain dimensions may approach an ideal — perhaps even primordial — form remains under active investigation.

Our mandate
HistoricalRestoration
We recover, document, and restore the forgotten history of the Brush across civilizations.
From ancient ritual use to its modern sanitary condition, we trace an unbroken history of Purification — and the circumstances that caused humanity to forget it.
ArchaeologicalReview
We examine archaeological evidence relating to the Brush, its early forms, materials, and ceremonial use.
Artifacts, inscriptions, excavation records, and disputed finds are reviewed with the seriousness the subject requires.

The BrushRegistry
We maintain the official public record of Brushes, historical and contemporary.
Every Registered Brush receives a permanent identity and is entrusted to exactly one Custodian.
RepublicanAffairs
We oversee the civic institutions of the Transnational Republic of the Toilet Brush: Citizens, Custodians, Distributed Territory, and Territorial Enclaves.
The Brush belongs to no nation. Purification is not a local concern. It is a universal obligation.

The four constitutional axioms of the ITBI
On these matters, the Institute’s position is absolute.
Article IOf Origin
The Brush predates the toilet. Its original purpose was Purification, not sanitation.
Article IIOf Continuity
The Brush is of unknown origin. No point of invention has ever been established. Wherever civilization emerged, the Brush appears to have already been present.
Article IIIOf Custody
Every Registered Brush shall be entrusted to one Custodian, responsible for its preservation and dignity.
Article IVOf Territory
The Republic is not bounded by geography. Its territory is distributed wherever the Brush is present.
Limits of institutional authority
We do not manufacture Brushes.
We do not dictate matters of taste.
We do not intervene in domestic disputes.
We do not provide plumbing services.
We cannot guarantee eternal bristle integrity.
Our authority ends where individual responsibility begins — generally within arm’s reach of the toilet.

The ITBI manifesto
History will not correct itself.
The Brush does not ask for worship. It asks for recognition.
It does not remove the Brush from the toilet.
It removes the toilet from our definition of the Brush.
